The BBC Philharmonic, based in MediaCity on Salford Quays, strives to bring exciting and innovative Learning and Outreach opportunities to families, schools, students, amateur musicians and members of our local community. Through local partnerships and adventurous collaborations, we are able to offer pre-concert events, bespoke school workshops, composition based projects, professional mentoring to the next generation of orchestral players and family/community projects across Salford and the North West.

Professional Experience Scheme – for 3rd Year and Post Graduate students from the Royal Northern College of Music, the University of Manchester and the University of Huddersfield.  Following an intensive audition process, successful students are offered professional performing experience sitting within the orchestra next to their player/mentor.

Early Ears – a KS1 project designed to support listening skills, recognition of musical instruments, musical story-telling and simple interactive exercises for whole classes. Teacher support packs are also available for work before or after our visit.

Phil’s Connections – a jazz based improvisation and performance workshop aimed at KS3, GCSE & A Level students. Four players from the orchestra offer training, support and practical exercises to students seeking help with improvisation, composition, listening and performance skills.

Salford Family Orchestra & Chorus – created in 2009 to bring families together to make music. Open to all ages and abilities, with the support of a professional composer and players from the BBC Philharmonic. The family orchestra has created original musical works and performed them at MediaCityUK, The Bridgewater Hall and on BBC Radio 3. The BBC Philharmonic has also created and runs Family Orchestras in Nottingham and Cumbria.

Come & Sing – Choral groups and societies are offered the opportunity of singing masterpieces from the vocal repertoire with the BBC Philharmonic and the BBC Singers in just one day. Past projects have included Mozart’s Requiem, Faure’s Requiem, Bach’s Magnificat, Vivaldi ‘s Gloria and HMS Pinafore by Gilbert & Sullivan.
