  • SOUND

sound is an innovative festival of new music.  From contemporary classical to electro-acoustic music, traditional, experimental and jazz, the festival brings together a wide range of different musical styles in a variety of concerts, workshops, installations and talks across the North East of Scotland, organised in collaboration with a network of local partner organisations. sound encourages people to discover new sounds and widen their musical horizons.

sound is committed to providing opportunities for young people and local musicians to work with top musicians and composers. These include soundlab, a new contemporary music ensemble for local players, and soundgeneration, a programme of year-round workshops and events offering children and young people opportunities to discover new music and to develop their performance and composition skills.

In 2013 sound, in partnership with Woodend Barn, ran a 6-month community engagement programme, Framed Against the Sky, working with composer Brian Irvine, poet Billy Letford and Red Note Ensemble to bring pop-up performances and workshops to communities across rural Aberdeenshire. The project actively involved 1,300 children and adults in the creation of new works as well as giving 1,800 others a taste of new music.

sound also encourages emerging composers or new musicians, providing opportunities to have their work performed during the festival.
