BRITTEN SINFONIA

Rooted in the East of England, our Creative Learning programme engages with schools, families and communities to provide opportunities for the widest possible audience to access high-quality professional music making. The programme is varied, high-impact, and fulfils a need for provision in the East of England that no other orchestra is as well-placed to meet. In the last three years, Britten Sinfonia has:

·       Reached 18,000 young people through its Creative Learning programme

·       Delivered over 360 project sessions, in and out of schools

·       Nurtured the talent of 60 young people through the Britten Sinfonia Academy

·       Workshopped 18 new works by student composers, three of whom have received professional commissions from the orchestra

·       Given 9 family concerts, reaching some 5,000 people

·       Given 4,800 young people the opportunity to hear the orchestra live in concert (many for the first time)

Britten Sinfonia is an organisation that has children and young people at its heart. Primarily through its Creative Learning programme, the orchestra nurtures talent and raises aspirations, giving children and young people performing and composing opportunities.

Wherever possible, Creative Learning links to and is inspired by our concert programmes, and its diversity. Like the orchestra’s concert activities, it is the artistic vision, skills and passion of our players which drives our Creative Learning programme.

Through collaborations with key partners including music education hubs, Aldeburgh Young Musicians, Wigmore Hall and Orchestras Live, we work strategically to develop exceptional music experiences for children and young people. Our flagship project is Britten Sinfonia Academy - an ensemble for the most talented musicians of secondary school age in the east of England. In addition, we work with schools, families and community groups to create bespoke education projects and interactive concerts, led and performed by our orchestra members.

We are also committed to finding tomorrow’s finest composers, through our OPUS commissioning scheme, which gives unpublished composers the opportunity to win a lunchtime commission with Britten Sinfonia, broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
